Consider, for example, a small-time online seller who receives a 1099-K form reporting $48,000 in total sales but has a profit of only about $19,000. Here, there is no math error since this form indicated something other than income, and this discrepancy is at the center of the confusion.
Two information returns that seem to have similar figures and rules will soon be of great importance. Changes in federal laws altered the thresholds. Also, early-2027 may hold something many accountants might miss.
Two forms, two directions
Form 1099-NEC is used to report payments for services performed by a non-employee. The business making the payment handles the filing of Form 1099-NEC. On the other hand, Form 1099-K is used to report the payments processed to various businesses. In essence, the same payment could appear in both forms since Form 1099-NEC focuses on the payment made while Form 1099-K focuses on the payment received.
The 2027 numbers at a glance
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act changes the rules about when 1099-NEC and 1099-K forms must be filed to claim certain payments. For payments made in 2026 and reported by early 2027, a 1099-NEC is required when payments to a seller total over $2000 rather than $600 due to the passing of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The threshold for 1099-K filings goes back to $20,000 in payments and 200 transactions. Because both of those conditions must be met, a seller who had 500 sales totaling only $12,000 would still not receive a 1099-K. (Source:taxbanditstaxbandits)
As a result of this change, many small sellers who would have received 1099-K forms under the previous, lower limit do not receive a form this year, even though their income remains the same.
The card payment gaps most firms miss
This is where even veteran preparers stumble. Payments made via card and a few other third-party network transactions are reported via Form 1099-K by the payment settlement entity and, thus, are not subject to Form 1099-NEC or Form 1099-MISC reporting. IRS.
Take an example of a contractor who pays $1,500 via a check and $1,500 via a credit card in 2026. Only the check amount counts toward the 1099-NEC limit. The value of $1,500 does not exceed the threshold of $2,000. As a result, there is no 1099-NEC. The card company reports the credit card payment, however, receiving no form is very likely for the contractor in this case because they have a low volume of transactions with the card. The contractor is liable for paying tax for the full $3,000 anyway. The tax applies to the income, even when no forms are issued. newswire
Thus, the right conclusion for companies is that lack of form does not mean that there is no income. 1099 is a reporting cause, not a measure of taxable income.
Companies that would prefer to sort out payment processes in their financial records rather than in December usually refer their year-end 1099 work to professionals.
Thresholds count payments, not invoices
The $2,000 scrutiny focuses on payments that were made this year as opposed to what invoices were raised. Only payments that took place in 2026 should be monitored in terms of the threshold amount. An invoice from December that was paid on January 1st will instead apply in the subsequent year, and therefore payments should be monitored under the payment dates and not service dates. patriotsoftware
There are two more traps along the way. From 2027, 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC thresholds will be subject to annual inflation changes, whereas the 1099-K threshold will not change as a result of inflation. Any cash figure that is included in a template will become obsolete, while the 1099-K amount will stay unchanged. patriotsoftware
The requirements of 1099-MISC do not move together, either. The majority of boxes in the form have a threshold fixed at $2,000; however, royalties would be reported at $10 and direct sales at $5,000. Hence, using the right box is much more important than the correct amount. taxbandits
Why a 1099-K is a starting point, not a tax bill
The 1099-K reveals the gross sales volume, without factoring in refunds. It shows the total amount paid by customers, notwithstanding the refunded order amounts, making it possible for the report to surge beyond the revenues recognized by a company. The location of fees, shipping fees, sales tax, and other adjustments is different depending on the marketplace. amazon
The ideal approach is reconciliation rather than worrying too much. Retrieve the report from the payment processor, make sure that revenues reported in the tax form match the market earnings, and then go through fees, refunds, and chargebacks set out in the report. The direct connection between the returns and the 1099 protects the customer in case of discrepancies reported by the IRS.
This bridge is to be found in tax working papers. Xconcile’s tax preparers collect 1099 documentation and prepare reconciliations easily available for review.
The number 200 appears in two places
The requirement for 1099-K is based on having 200 transactions. Many states rely on a similar 200-transaction threshold in determining sales tax economic nexus, frequently in conjunction with a $100,000 sales threshold. Therefore, a seller that has collected $15,000 in income through 300 transactions could still be found to have exceeded the transaction threshold for sales tax purposes in a particular state and not receive a 1099-K.
The failure of a 1099-K to arrive is not evidence that sales tax requirements have been satisfied. Tracking these thresholds across states is a job that many firms outsource. Xconcile provides multiple services that include nexus tracking, registration, and filings.
A year-end checklist that actually works
There are some practices that will relieve most of 1099 issues. First, make sure to collect a W-9 from all contractors during the onboarding process as opposed to December because one never knows who will be making payments. Identify the method of each different payment in your records by labeling card payments separately from payments made by check.
This enables you to prepare the 1099-NEC records as well as eliminate double accounting on Form 1099-K. Your reports from your payment processor should be regular rather than surprising so that reconciliation will be something you do all year long instead of dealing with in February. Finally, designate one person for creating and maintaining the links between payments and revenue accounts.
Clean mapping is bookkeeping at heart, and firms without spare capacity often rely on outsourced accounting and bookkeeping support to keep it current.
The January date most firms get wrong
The next point we would like to talk about is the 1099-NEC obligation for payments made in 2026. The deadline for submitting 1099-NEC forms is January 31, 2027. The IRS must still receive this payment on January 31, and so must the recipient. However, January 31 is a Sunday, so the deadline shifts to February 1, 2027, which is a Monday. Many accounting firms put 31st of January in their schedule but realize later that it falls on the weekend. xero
Try not to be late. Plan to be ready by late January, with February 1 being your final deadline, so this means that you still have time for W-9s and to finalize the 1099-K reconciliation. Where outsourcing fits
The majority of the work being done in this article is about reconciliation, documentation, and calendar management, which is what weighs down small teams in January. The services of Xconcile correspond to each aspect of it. The tax team of the company creates records of work that connect 1099s to the draft tax return, the payroll and compliance team provides the issue of 1099-NECs, and the sales and use tax group monitors nexus in various states. According to its website, the organization serves over 1000 active clients among which are many CPA firms seeking additional capacity during the busy season.
